The images of literary portrait and its methods of transferring in translation

Abstract

The article deals with one of the difficulties for translators – methods of conveying the portrait depiction. A writer needs the psychologist’s skills to describe the character of the hero, his inner world. The authors, identifying differences between the portrait in art and in literature, consider the problem of preservation in the literary translation of the original text, depicting psychology of the characters through the portrait, finding equivalents, adequacy and accuracy correspondences. The practice of translating portrait descriptions in classical literature, mistakes and methods of their correction are considered as well. Portrait characteristics of the heroes, description of face, look, eye movements and eyebrows, gestures, manners, gait and different ways of the translation are analyzed. The linguistic features of the original through depicting a portrait and the difficulties of translation into another language are investigated.
