Editing Essentials and Practice

Abstract

The article deals the methods and techniques of literary editing. The main directions of development of editing are revealed. The problem of linguistic and stylistic criteria for determining the quality of literature is considered in the editing plan of various texts, the basic concepts of editing translated texts of fiction analyzes are analyzed. The technology of editing is characterized in the article, in particular in the field of the clearness of structural compliance, achievement of the initial purpose, use of professional skills. Features of editing depending on a genre and style of work, for example, in relation to journalese, scientific and technical, popular scientific texts are revealed. As a result of research results of creative process which happens in the field of literary editing when the author, the translator, the editor interact are generalized and characterized, working over the text, improving it in publishing. While translating the text one should preserve author's style, equivalence in structural, stylistic, grammatical, logical compliances which come to light as a result of the comparative and comparative analysis of text. Showing an important role of professional literary editing in preservation of author's style, unity of idea and composition of literary work, value of lessons of classics of the literature which have shown models of laborious work on the text is emphasized. The main requirements which have to become basic in activity of the literary worker, the editor of the translated text are formulated. It is shown that the literary editor, the editor of the translated texts has to possess encyclopedic knowledge and qualities of the professional linguist as the purpose of all creative process is extrapolation of author's style
