Abstract

The article discusses some aspects of teaching the course «Scientific and Technical Translation» in the Faculty of Physics & Technology, KazNU. The main problem of teaching the course «Scientific and Technical Translation» at nonlinguistic faculties is a limited number of hours for the subject, and insufficiently high level of proficiency in English. Therefore, in a very limited time teachers must provide students with skills using which students will be able to translate texts connected with their specialty. When translating the text, we teach students to use the knowledge on their specialty, which leads to the choice of topics already studied in the course of Physics. Their knowledge of the subject area helps students determine the correct translation of the term, because often terms have different meanings depending on the area of their application. The article shows the relationship between the STT course and professionally-oriented English language. A comparison of examples of word-for-word and literary translation is shown.
