Abstract

The article of methodical character is based on the results of studying repetition as a means of coherence in texts of various styles. It is devoted to the questions of its role in conveying the main content of thoughts. Repetition is used as a way of speech expressiveness for the purpose of attracting the reader’s attention. The use of repetitions is analyzed in texts of different styles while considering the main aspects of speech activity. Some functions of repetition are considered: for creating the information transmission sequence, expressiveness, giving the clarity, conveying mo­notony of actions, intensification, expression of frequency or duration of action, softening the transition from one plan of the statement to another, rhythm, slowing-down the narration, stylization of the informal emotional speech. Students carry out a search of answers to such questions as how to eliminate repetition deficiency, whether repetition in sentences is justi­fied. They try to prove their answers through the independent analysis of educational-scientific, scientific proper, scientific-popular texts.
