The different approaches to the problem of the borrowing of terminology by calque

Abstract

The article deals with the different approaches to the problem of the borrowing of terminology by calque on the basis of the concrete facts and examples. The different theoretical aspects of calque and its relation to the process of translation are analyzed. As it turns out, subject to availability the other ways of translation (for example, descriptive – explanatory translation) the terms borrowed by calque prevail in the terminological system. The article contains the detailed critical review of the different scientists’ conceptions and views on the status of calque; it is noted that there is difference of opinions about this problem in Azerbaijani linguistics. Considering the groups and classifications of the kinds of calque proposed by the different researchers the author expresses and substantiates own view on the subject.It is emphasized that analysis of the theoretical aspects of calque requires the general analysis of the appraisal of this phenomenon in linguistics, including the theory of translation. Attitude of calque to the process of borrowing is rather complex problem and it hasn’t found its clear scientific solution in Azerbaijani linguistics yet.
