The tandem method as a way to form intercultural communicative competence

Abstract

Modern life cannot be imagined without intercultural interaction, for this reason intercultural communicative competence has been defined as the central competence of the 21st century and is the ultimate goal of teaching a foreign language. Accordingly, scientists, linguists, methodologists, teachers of foreign languages ​​are faced with the task of developing a methodology and methods for the formation of ICC in the context of non-contact bilingualism. In this regard, the study of a foreign language in tandem can be considered as an effective teaching method, during which there is immersion in the natural language environment and culture of the language being studied. The possibilities of digital technologies allow organizing tandem language learning both offline and online. This study is a theoretical review of modern scientific approaches to the disclosure of the concept of intercultural communicative competence, methods and ways of its formation. The main principles and benefits of using tandem learning are highlighted, such as overcoming the language barrier, increasing motivation, language practice with a native speaker on a regular basis, developing social interaction skills and knowledge of culture. The experience of introducing the tandem method into the educational process in other countries is also analyzed. In conclusion, the author gives the main directives necessary for successful language learning in tandem.
