Abstract

This commemorative article honors the life and scholarly legacy of Lars Johanson, one of the most influential figures in modern Turkic linguistics. Johanson played a decisive role in establishing the study of Turkic languages as a theoretically grounded and internationally recognized linguistic discipline. His contributions span a wide range of fields, including verbal aspect, evidentiality, language typology, and contact linguistics. Among his most influential theoretical frameworks are the aspect model for Turkic verb systems and the contact-linguistic model of code-copying, both of which have been applied far beyond the Turkic domain. In addition to his extensive scholarly output—exceeding 500 publications—Johanson made lasting contributions through his editorial work, notably the Turcologica series and the journal Turkic Languages, as well as his leadership in the Encyclopedia of Turkic Languages and Linguistics Online. This article reflects on his academic achievements, his role as a mentor and teacher, and his enduring impact on generations of scholars in Turkic studies and general linguistics.
